Portugal

I'm just back from 6 days of holiday in Portugal. Together with Marieke I went to Paul in Estoril. Kind of reunion with the well established traditions of drinking wine and whiskey, good food and nice stories. It was great to see Paul again, the last big trip together is already 5 years ago - summiting Mount McKinley. We are already making plans again but currently the Pauls focus is more on his family and home, but I'm waiting for the trips in the future.

It was pretty warm - 15-20 degrees, nice warm sun and sometimes rain. We visited two really cool climbing spots. The first one is located close to Estoril and is called Guia. Cool limestone routes, it is well bolted and you climb close to the sea. The area is pretty impressive and the nice thing is that easy routes in the lower grades are close to the harder routes.

The second area is Rocha da Pena in the south of Portugal, about 40 minutes drive from Faro. The limestone cliffs get sun early in the morning and are easy accessible by car, followed by a nice hike of maybe 15 minutes. The limestone is solid and sharp and the routes are well bolted as well.

These rock climbing days are the first rock days in 2013 and I must say: good start of the season. I climbed a few 6c's onsight, which is pretty good for my climbing level.

If you are looking for a nice spot of climbing in the south of Europe I really can recommend Portugal. A nice topo is this one: http://www.climb-europe.com/RockClimbingShop/Portugal-Onsight-Rock-Climbing-Guidebook.html

Ryanair offers good tickets.

But there is one thing we learned and I want to warn you: our complete climbing gear was stolen out of our rental car at the very first day at the cliffs in Guia. The packs were not visible from the outside and after some research on the www we suppose that we were not the only climbers who have been visited... The rock climbing season is just starting, but especially in the south of Europe there are a lot of people with no job, no money and no future. The economic crisis is for most us something we know from TV, travelling in the south we can learn a lot from people who lost everything... But please be careful with your gear!!!

climbing last month

A few weeks ago I went to the Frankenjura together with Peter. We did some great limestone climbing. It was my sixth or seventh visit to this great area. My climbing is slightly improving on the steep, fingery and sometimes "interesting" protected limestone routes. Onsight climbing level improved to 7/7+ and I definitley feel there is plenty of potential to improve. The power in my fingers improves a lot through bouldering and my campus training at home. Power in your fingers is definitley a great thing to have if climbing in Frankenjura. Also my foot placement improves, nice to discover that there are a lot of more foot holds than during my first climbing trips :-)

Last week I went to the Tessin in the south of Switserland for climbing the Alhambra. this route is famous, and one of the big routes in the south. It's well protected and very long (18 pitches up to 6b+). We climbed the lower part of the route (slabs). After 10 pitches we decided to go down because my climbing partner really did not feel well on the slabs.

In september I started a really cool training with plenty of running, weight lifting and indoor climbing. It's nice to do 2 sessions a day and feeling the improvement from week to week!!! I'm very excited to start the first winter climbs of this upcoming season. Maybe the second week of november gives some opportunities to do the first north faces or gullies!!! yeah.

rock climbing Ettringen and Berdorf

The last two weekends I went climbing in Ettringen and Berdorf. Together with Miel and Fien we discoverd some new routes in Kottenheim, sector Arena and then to the left of "Seide und Schwert", more info you will get here. As strong evidence from this good jamming workout I had some serious muscle soreness in my upper arms and spine for the next two days, yeah.

Last weekeind I went to Berdorf (Luxembourg) for some sandstone climbing. I heard a lot of good stories in advanced but never went to this favourite climbing spot of a lot of German and Dutch climbers in this area. Well, indeed, the climbing was really cool. There are a lot of easy lines (mostly diedres) but also some really hard shit. I spotted one guy climbing a 8a+ on the Herman Buhl rock, cool!
I climbed one 6c and a few easier routes. Marieke and I also did some hiking and on our way home we went to Echternach (cake and coffee, mmmmm....) and to the lake (nice swimming).
The climbing in Berdorf is really good, but to be honest: too many people in this small area, a lot of screaming, rubbish and other human waste.... unbelievable. Currently there are no real restrictions (you only have to get a permit), but everybody gets it. And if we behave like this, I'm sure there will be some serious restrictions to access the area in the nearby future. Of course I will return, but not in the weekend!

rock climbing

I spent nice warm (let's say hot) weeks hiking, cycling and climbing on different locations in Europe. After the very alpine experiences earlier this summer I really wanted to climb some hard good bolted routes, no scarry slippery movements on wet rocks 5 meter above your last piece of protection, you know what I mean.

So our first stop was in the Pfalz area in the south western part of Germany on the border to France. People with great sense for hospitality, culture of good food and wine. First we went to a nice rock and thought let's climb this easy 2 pitch route on the north pillar, it was rated UIAA 2+. I expected kind of a walk in the park, but after climbing the first 10 meters I put the first piece of protection (a small friend in a very sandy crack), pffff. The climbing continued into a chimnee and there were no clear signs of where to go. I already climbed 20 meters, and I thought, ok this a grade 4 or so, climbing was nice but it was not protectable. Then the route got steep and I thought, well I will not return in a 2+, that was definitley not an option. So I continued up and after 30 meters of climbing I put a second piece of protection (a small nut in an undefined crack). 5 meters above me I saw a huge metal ring, ok, thats were I have to go. I made belay on that ring and wished Marieke all the best  with seconding this pitch, because a pendulum would be a very painful experience in this route. The next pitch was easy, I mean easy in the sense of easy....
we had a great view from the top.

cool sandstone in the Pfalz

Next day we came back and climbed a V+, and again, very few bolts, and to be honest, I don't trust these glued rings in sandstone. It's better to protect the route for yourself. The climbing was really nice and at the top of the second pitch I had to climb a real off width crack. I put the biggest friend into it and used a few arm jams to go up, reallllyyyy coool.

Next stop was the Grimsel/Goms area in Zwitserland. we did some really nice hiking and after the sandstone climbing in the Pfalz we now climbed on Gneiss close to the small village of Gletsch. Nice climbing, well bolted, fun!

After a few days we went further to the south. We wanted to go to Orpierre in the south of France. On our way down from the Simplon pass we got some trouble with our car. It was 35 degrees and luckily there was a competent garage and of course there was the lake, the Lago Maggiore. That lake definitley saved my life. After the car was finally repaired we went to Orpierre. I never had been to this place, but we really enjoyed the French way of living and climbing. Either early in the morning from 8 to 10 climbing or in the late afternoon (after 17.00h).
Really cool lime stone, some sectors are steep/overhanging and others are vertical and fingery. All the routes are good protected and the range of difficulties is from 3c to 8c. I really love this place and I definitley will come back in the future. I think best time for climbing is march to may and september to november. But even now in summer we had a really good time on the rock! get up, and try it!

Pfalz
